When was the last time you were stuck behind a garbage truck? Did you steer your car a little to the left to see if you could be "quick like a bunny" and zip around it? Even though it was a 2 lane double yellow line, you wanted to risk it didn't you? Not long ago, I was stuck behind one. It was moving slowly up a hill (think major blind spot) and no way around it safely.
I watched as it crawled to a stop. A man jumped off the tiny ledge he was standing on and grabbed the next can in line. He scooted it up to the arm and pushed a button on the control panel inside the truck. As the can rose in the air, its lid opened like a yawn and the bags of trash fell into the compactor. Almost simultanelously, the compactor smushed the white trash bags and cardboard boxes and the arm that lifted the can into the air, shook the can loose and it made a loud thud as it hit the pavement.
As I am thinking, "there's another 4 minutes I will never get back" A very loud "COOOOOOOL" emerged from my son in the back of the van. A second later, my daughter says, "WHOAAAAAHHH." My son asks, "Will it do it again!!??"
This is the delight in the having children. Seeing something mundane suddenly become wildly entertaining again. Who knew on a bright, sunny Wednesday afternoon that I would see something through new sets of green and blue eyes.
