Before the sun was up, I was awake. I sat up and looked at my clock. 4:45. On a Saturday no less. So much for sleep late days. It's true. Adulting is hard. I had 45 minutes before the coffee pot was going to start brewing. I could make it brew now but decided to flip on the television. After passing a few informercials and other similar paid programming, I stopped on a TV preacher. I don't watch a lot of television, especially on Saturday mornings when I should be sleeping but his message captured my attention. I thought maybe that's why I'm awake. I'm supposed to hear this.
He was preaching the story of the mustard seed - the faith in it and the harvest from it. I was interested, so I fluffed the pillows and turned up the volume just a little more. I wish I could remember his name, but he explained that it's one thing to have the mustard seed mentality and wait patiently on the day you can harvest, but you will never harvest what God intends for you to have UNLESS you EXPECT it. He says that you can have the faith of the mustard seed and you wait for the harvest but unless you wait with EXPECTATION the harvest will never be as good as God intended.
Wait, what? This was a plot twist for me. I'd never heard it said in that way. I was captivated.
His analogy was this: Imagine you ask a farmer, who just finished planting his field; if he expects to get a crop from his field. What if the farmer said no? You'd think he'd been out in the sun too long, right? Why would you plant something but not expect to get growth from it. Some harvests are leaner than others, but when you plant seeds, you expect *something* to grow. If the farmer plants the seeds but forgets about the crop then he's leaving the harvest to chance. If he just plants the seeds and waits to see what happens, then the field hasn't been cultivated, fertilized, watered or weeded. The farmer missed a crucial step of the harvest.
And so it goes for our faith, if we only plant and then harvest, we miss the beautiful "in-between" steps. There are many moving parts in between Seed and Harvest. The first step was planting the seed in the first place, but maybe that's when God planted the seed in your heart. The part where we are involved with God and God reaches down from the Heavens to be involved with us. The part where we lean into Him and ask for His blessings on our efforts. The step where He becomes perfect in our weakness. The part where we acknowledge that we can't do this without Him. The time it takes to learn patience and we appreciate the glory in God's perfect timing. This is the in between space where our faith grows. Where we cultivate our relationship with God and learn to wait with expectancy and pray for all the good things to come.
Planting a seed is an beautiful leap of faith.
Harvesting gives an opportunity for gratitude.
But Praying with Expectancy and Patience is what really connects us on a deep level with God.

Matthew 13:31-32 - He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES.
